Terms of Reference


1. The Committee has decided to appoint a chair for a period of one (1) year.
2. The Committee had decided to appoint a Vice Chairperson if the Chairperson is unable to attend the meetings.
3. The Committee will be composed of ten (10) Self-Advocates who receive services from Community Living Algoma.
4. A quorum of the Self-Advocate Committee shall be fifty (50) percent of members, plus one (1).
5. The Committee will meet every third Thursday of each month. Meetings are at the call of the Chair.
6. A Self-Advocate Committee member who is absent for three (3) consecutive committee meetings, without cause or notice, will have his/her name removed as a member of this committee.
7. The Self-Advocate Committee will maintain accurate records of its proceedings and activities.

Goals


1. To hold monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 3:00 pm at the office.

2. Committee minutes to be copied directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

3. To have our own computer to connect with other Self-Advocates.

4. To attend Self Advocacy conferences and retreats outside our community.

5. To provide safety education to people receiving services from Community Living Algoma.

6. To develop opportunities for Self-Advocates, to participate and be involved in the community’s activities and celebrations.

7. To speak up for more accessible transportation in our own community.

8. To have a job in the community, where we get paid eth same amount of money as everyone else.

9. To hold fundraising events.

10. To connect with local media, newspapers, T.V., radio and the internet.

11. To develop our own website.

12. To improve our computer/internet skills.

13. To advocate at the government level, the things that are important to us.

14. To continue to challenge staff to provide with disabilities, the highest quality service and supports.

15. We want to always remember why we started this committee and why it is important to each of us.

16. We want to see people with disabilities enjoy the same Rights and Freedoms as everyone else.
